Oral Pathology is the medical science concerned with the histological diagnosis of all the diseases affecting the oral and facial tissues (teeth, gums, skin and jaw bones).  Dr. Guerra at TERSA Oral and Facial Surgery is involved in the diagnosis and treatment of oral and facial pathologic conditions.

The most common signs of these conditions are:

  • Red patches (erythroplakia) or white patches (leukoplakia) in the mouth.
  • A sore or ulcer that fails to heal and bleeds easily.
  • A lump or thickening on the skin lining the inside of the mouth.
  • Ear pain not associated to ear infection
  • Chronic sore throat or hoarseness.
  • Difficulty in chewing.
  • Trouble swallowing or pain swallowing.
  • Lumps in the neck
  • White/red patches in the lips
  • Skin Lesions

To establish a diagnosis involves and exhaustive evaluation of the patient’s medical history, patient’s clinical exam, often complemented with a radiographic evaluation if indicated.  Based on the medical history, clinical examination, and a general knowledge of oral pathology, a differential diagnosis is made. Confirmation of a definitive diagnosis may include laboratory testing, further radiological study, and/or biopsy with microscopic examination.

Once a definitive diagnosis is established, consideration is given to the specifics of treatment, if indicated. Based on his knowledge of oral pathology, his training, and his experience, our doctor is well suited to discuss treatment alternatives with patient. There are instances when surgical treatment is indicated as well as instances when a team surgical approach or referral is indicated. In cases where surgery is performed, our doctor will follow the patient through recovery to optimum health.

It is very important to look in our mouth at least once a month or so, remembering that your mouth is the entrance of your digestive system, and an area of our body where  multiple systemic diseases will manifest as a first sign. Please, do not ignore suspicious lumps or sores. Please contact us so we may help you.
